#121 new defect

Newly created root disks need salvaging.

Reported by: anonymous Owned by: Eric Swenson
Priority: minor Milestone:
Component: Install/Upgrade Version:

Description

Doing "boot star rvls" on a newly built root disk results in many "04 Corrected master directory UID in header" messages in the SALV OUTPUT report. (Discussions with Olin Sibert about the messages indicate that this is a minor Multics issue related to the order of events in the cold boot rather then an emulator or cold boot process error).

Adding a salvage run at the end of the cold boot process would clean up the distributed disk image.

Recommendation: fix the release-build procedure, not Multics code.

  • The symptom. A first boot star rvls on a newly built root disk reports many 04 Corrected master directory UID in header. According to the ticket, Olin Sibert attributed this to the order of events during a cold boot: master directories are created before the UID that their headers record is final. The salvager corrects it, and it does no harm.
  • Suggested fix. Add a salvage pass (boot star rvls, or the equivalent in the QuickStart/release build scripts) as the last step of building the distributed root disk image, so that users receive an already-corrected disk.
  • We could look to fix the root cause. We'd need to look at where init_branches/init_root_dir create the master directories (>lv-level directories such as >udd) during a cold boot. Check which UID is written into the directory header versus the branch.
